cons: Several iconic book lines and characters were trimmed, the conclusion was rushed, some critics complained about the direction of the novel, but the cast is very cute.

 Book vs Movie, What Actually Changed

The last chapter of the book is set in Palm Springs, but the movie switches to a destination wedding at Barcelona. In the movie, Alex's image as a dedicated reader and instructor, so much a part of his character in the book, is toned down. There are a couple of lines that fans of the book are searching for but don't appear in the script. Also, the non-linear time line for vacations in the novel is also shortened to fit the two-hour film time, so that some of the more gradual development of the relationship in the book has to be sped up. If you're a fan of the novel's internal voice and slow-burn, meet those expectations coming into the film. If you are here for the first time, without any book you will not be bothered by anything.

It currently has a 78 per cent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 6.3 rating on the website. It has a 50/100 Meta critic rating, or mixed to average. Audiences’ reactions are equally divided. There was plenty of excitement among readers over the lead chemistry and the travel-heavy visuals, though just as many were critical of the pacing as being rushed and the end being arbitrary, particularly those who had read the book and came to different conclusions about it.

Who Should Watch This Movie

If you're a fan of friends to lovers’ romances, don't care if this isn't a slow burn, don't mind a story that's set in a great place, are a big Emily Henry fan, or just want a light comforting ROM-Com, then watch this. If you want it to be a scene-for-scene remake, or you want your romance to be super fast, then skip it.

Plot, Spoiler-Light

A travel writer, Poppy is discontented with a career that was once her dream, but something has gone wrong. A homebody who has lived in different cities for the last ten years, her college best friend, Alex, has spent one week of summer vacation with her each year for the last 10 years, though they haven't spoken for the last two years. Old feelings that neither of them has voiced come bubbling up when their brother's wedding in Barcelona provides Poppy with an opportunity to reconnect.

What Works

But Bader and Blyth really pitch the friends-to-lovers scenario and the first moments of their relationship – a low-key diner conversation was called out by critics  are truly warm. It definitely embraces its travel theme, and it's the right decision because this is a film that wants you to feel like you went on vacation as well. Easy comic energy is provided by Molly Shannon and Alan Ruck as Poppy's parents.

 Where It Falls Short

Others took to Twitter to criticize the absence of any direction that avoids the wide shot format and holding the camera at distance during the moments of most emotional beats to the film. The pacing is the biggest concern in audience reviews, the middle part is too slow and the end is too quick; some said it was too easy to come up with the end of the film after all that buildup.

My Take

 If not read with the book in mind, it's a nice, nice-looking rom-com driven by two characters who definitely have chemistry. As a fan of the novel, you will notice what's missing more than what's there while watching it. There's nothing wrong with either reaction, this is a movie for newcomers, and not readers who are trying to save a favorite book.

 It's the first time ever that any of Emily Henry's novels has been turned into a movie and four more are in development for adaptation, so if this one is for you, it's just the beginning.
